Colloquium : \”Manuscript and Printed Books of Hours : Rupture and Continuity\”

Colloquium
, Manuscript and Printed Books of Hours : Rupture and Continuity,
Saturday, September 19, 2009; 2:00 to 5:30 P.M; INHA (Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art), 2 rue Vivienne, 75002 Paris.
This colloquium will explore different aspects of French book production during the Age of Gutenberg between about 1485 and 1575. Between 1480 and 1600 there were some 1,775 different Horae editions printed. Then, in the middle of the sixteenth century the Catholic Church made several critical decisions, in the context of reforms following the Council of Trent, which caused the immediate decline of the Book of Hours. Two sessions explore (1) the participation of illuminators, including the Master of Anne of Brittany and Jean Pichore, in the design of woodcuts for printed Books of Hours in Paris around 1500; and (2) the legacy of early Parisian printed Books of Hours in Lyons and Rouen after mid-century. Speakers include Marie-Blanche Cousseau, Isabelle Delaunay, Severine Lepape, Caroline Zöhl, Ariane Bergeron-Foote, and Vanessa Selbach. Discussants are Eberhard König and Sandra Hindman.
Final program available after August 1 on www.lesenluminures.com.
Registration required in advance (space is limited).
